Summary

An action-packed thriller and source of the hit Netflix drama where the only way to survive is to play the game!

Eighteen-year-old Ryohei Arisu is sick of his life。 School sucks, his love life is a joke, and his future weighs on him like impending doom。 As he struggles to exist in a world that can’t be bothered with him, Ryohei feels like everything would be better if he were anywhere else。 When a strange fireworks show transports him and his friends to a parallel world, Ryohei thinks all his wishes have come true。 But this new world isn’t an empty paradise, it’s a vicious game。 And the only way to survive is to play。

The first game starts with a bang, but Ryohei manages to beat the clock and save his friends。 It’s a short-lived victory, however, as they discover that winning only earns them a visa worth a few days’ grace period。 If they want to get home, they’re going to have to start playing a lot harder。

SO GOOD!!!!

I have been waiting for this manga since I watched the Netflix live action。 If you are a fan of that, this is so much better!! It clears up a lot of the plot holes and the main character Arisu is a lot more likable。 Also the games are slightly different so it’s entertaining even if you have seen the show。 Honestly, I am just sad that I have to wait now for the next volume!! I am so excited!!

This book is one of the best books I've ever read! It stars a young teenager named Arisu, (english translation: Alice) and depicts his boring, non-productive life。 We can see him hanging out with his two best friends, who seem to be unsuccessful in their careers, like Arisu himself。 They happen to be goofing around when the 3 get transported to a alternate universe, called the borderlands。 The three are extremely confused, as the world around them looks like Tokyo, their home city。 However, not This book is one of the best books I've ever read! It stars a young teenager named Arisu, (english translation: Alice) and depicts his boring, non-productive life。 We can see him hanging out with his two best friends, who seem to be unsuccessful in their careers, like Arisu himself。 They happen to be goofing around when the 3 get transported to a alternate universe, called the borderlands。 The three are extremely confused, as the world around them looks like Tokyo, their home city。 However, not a person can be seen, it's just the three of them in a lonely city。 They rejoice at first, happy to be rid of the troublesome burdens of their lives。 A large white screen interrupts their conversation, signaling the start of a "game"。 Arisu, after playing a few games, figures out the truth about this empty world。 There were people around them, but not as much as before。 These people were referred to as "players" who joined in on playing, to renew their visa, as in how long they could stay in borderland。 However, there was one catch that changed everything。 If you lose, you die。 These games weren't all so simple though, some used dangerous weapons like axes and others used brains。 These games were inspired by a deck of cards, each number and suit meaning something different。 Each game winner would acquire a card, and when the players have collected all the cards, they are free from the treacherous world。 The numbers represent the level of toughness in the game, and the suit represents the type of game。 Spades mean physical games such as deadly tag, Diamonds represent a game of wits and brain。 Clubs represent team work, where players must trust each other and work together。 The last one, the most deadly and torturous game of all, a heart game。 These are the worst because they involve playing with people's hearts, making them kill each other。 The story follows Arisu's heart wrenching journey along with new characters and new discoveries。This is personally one of my favorite stories because of the well-made plot。 The twists and turns, which a reader like myself would never even imagine take place, where the reader understands the sorrow of the characters and the pain present in the scenes。 One of the strengths of this story that it is not slow burn, it keeps the reader hooked at every part of the story, and doesn't have any useless scenes。 The characters are so beautifully written in a way that though they may not be likable, they are for sure realistic like the ten of hearts game, where players were pushed to their very limits, where moral people made bad choices。 One thing the author can improve on is making the book a bit more positive, because I feel a lot of people would stop reading it if it was just too sad in almost every scene。 Other than that, this book is one of the best mangas, and has a very eye-catching plot! 。。。more

This ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review I first learned about this series after watching the adaptation on Netflix, which became one of the few shows I watched start-to-finish in 2021。 It was recommended by a coworker of mine, and they were spot-on with the assumption that I would enjoy the show。 Unfortunately, I found the manga — of which, the edition this review is for compiles the first two volumes — pretty unsatisfactory。 I didn’t find any of This ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review I first learned about this series after watching the adaptation on Netflix, which became one of the few shows I watched start-to-finish in 2021。 It was recommended by a coworker of mine, and they were spot-on with the assumption that I would enjoy the show。 Unfortunately, I found the manga — of which, the edition this review is for compiles the first two volumes — pretty unsatisfactory。 I didn’t find any of the early characters introduced—Arisu included—compelling, and I didn’t particularly care what happened to them。 It was interesting to see which of the challenges were different from the ones I’d already known, but other than that… Well, this review somehow turned out to be more about the show than the manga, but if you had to ask me, I would recommend spending your time on the adaptation instead。 At the very least, the characters are more complex and a bit easier to cheer for。 。。。more

Diferente a la serie, pero similar en la historia。 Los dibujos son fantasticos y por ahora todos los personajes me caen bien。

Alice in Borderland continues the line of killing games such as Btooom! and those of Yoshiki Tonogai。 I wanted to read this before I try the Netflix series。 Arisu is sick of life and wishes something to change, even zombies would be welcome。 He only has two friends and they all have suffocating backgrounds one way or the other。 These three end up witnessing a fireworks show and suddenly they wake up in a weird world that seems dystopic。 Soon they learn that they are in Borderland and have to pla Alice in Borderland continues the line of killing games such as Btooom! and those of Yoshiki Tonogai。 I wanted to read this before I try the Netflix series。 Arisu is sick of life and wishes something to change, even zombies would be welcome。 He only has two friends and they all have suffocating backgrounds one way or the other。 These three end up witnessing a fireworks show and suddenly they wake up in a weird world that seems dystopic。 Soon they learn that they are in Borderland and have to play games to survive。 For me the manga starts a bit too abruptly and gets to business too soon。 We only get glimpses of the place, since no one knows about the place, which was a good call。 There's this lingering doom too。 I did like the friendship thing in the story, but somehow I have a feeling they cannot all survive。The art looks crude, but works well with the story line。 The characters have facial expressions and we get to see the blood and gore too。 The series is surely interesting and it can get better depending on the plot and how it's revealed。 I always wish manga series would use more time to set the story though, especially shounen。 Those kind of dive right into the action without a second thought。 Still, a steady series for those that love their games like this aka everyone dying。 。。。more
